A new version of a theatrical production about the life and times of Marvin Gaye is now on stage in Sarasota, Florida. The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s ‘Marvin Gaye: Prince of Soul,’ starring Sheldon Roden, opened on Wednesday (July 16) and runs until August 10.
The play is a revamped version of a production previously staged by the Troupe called ‘Marvin Gaye: The Man and His Music,’ created and directed in both stagings by Nate Jacobs, who also plays Gaye’s father. Songs in the show include ‘Stubborn Kind Of Fellow,’ ‘Pride & Joy,’ ‘How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)’ and ‘Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),’ although Jacobs was unable this time to be granted permission to use ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ or ‘What’s Going On.’
The main narrator in the show is Gaye’s brother Frankie, played by Emmanuel Avraham. Janesia Shanae plays Tammi Terrell, Sasha Lumsden appears as both Marvin’s first wife Anna Gordy and as another of his duet partners, Kim Weston.
