The Kanneh-Masons won Best Classical Artist at The Global Awards 2021. The seven extraordinarily talented brothers and sisters – Isata, Braimah, Sheku, Konya, Jeneba, Aminata and Mariatu – have become famous around the world for their incredible musical talent.

Violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason said, “Thank you so much on behalf of The Kanneh-Masons for this ‘Best Classical Artist’ award. We’re so grateful to receive it. It was a real pleasure for us to perform for so many of you over lockdown through the Facebook Lives and also through the album Carnival of the Animals, which we all had such fun recording.”

“Thank you so much for listening to and supporting this album”

Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason added, “Thank you so much for listening to and supporting this album. It was such a wonderful opportunity for us to share music as a family and to you around the world, and the support has meant such a lot to all of us. Thank you so much to Decca Classics for recording this album with us and also to Enticott Music Management for taking care of us on and off stage, and so we hope to be back on stage soon and performing for you around the world.”

The Kanneh-Masons’ first family album Carnival

The Kanneh-Masons released their first family album Carnival, a very special collaboration featuring all seven Kanneh-Mason siblings, Academy Award-winning actor Olivia Colman, and children’s author Michael Morpurgo, in November 2020. Carnival includes new poems written by War Horse author Morpurgo to accompany French composer Saint-Saëns’ humorous musical suite Carnival of the Animals.

While Carnival marks the first Kanneh-Mason family album, Sheku and Isata have both released their own solo albums. Sheku Kanneh-Mason rose to fame after winning BBC Young Musician 2016 and performed at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. He has released two albums: Inspiration which topped the UK Classical Album Chart and peaked at No. 11 in the Official UK Album Chart, and Elgar which also topped the UK Classical Album Chart and entered the Official UK Album Chart at No. 8. Sheku’s sister, pianist Isata, topped the UK Classical Album Chart with her debut album Romance: The Piano Music of Clara Schumann.

The Global Awards brings together Global’s radio stations; Capital, Heart, Smooth, Classic FM, LBC, Radio X, Capital XTRA and Gold, to honour the stars of music, news and entertainment. As the Global Awards ceremony was unable to take place this year the 2021 winners were revealed on air, online and on Global Player to fans on Monday 3 May.
