Hear Daniil Trifonov’s ‘Mi Historia Americana – Sur’
The second chapter of Trifonov’s musical journey across the Americas includes works connected to Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Peru and the Dominican Republic.
Daniil Trifonov has released Mi Historia Americana – Sur, the second installment in his musical journey across the Americas. Issued by Deutsche Grammophon, the album brings together solo piano repertoire with two works for piano and orchestra, drawing on music connected to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Peru and Argentina.
Much of the project took shape during an extended stay with Trifonov’s family in the Dominican Republic, where he spent time exploring Latin American piano music. “Latin American music has distinctive qualities: inspirations from nature, traditional dances and songs, and evocations of faith,” Trifonov said. The solo program includes works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Mozart Camargo Guarnieri, Oscar Lorenzo Fernández, Alberto Ginastera, Michel Camilo, Juan Francisco García, Rafael Bullumba Landestoy, Ernesto Lecuona and Gabriela Lena Frank, as well as Trifonov’s own “Tango.”

The album also features two orchestral works recorded in São Paulo in February with members of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and Venezuelan multi-instrumentalist, arranger and musical director Gonzalo Grau. It opens with Grau’s arrangement of Ary Barroso’s “Aquarela do Brasil.” Trifonov and the orchestra also present the world-premiere recording of Osvaldo Golijov’s Cuadros del Sur, a work co-commissioned by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Grammophon, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Aspen Music Festival. The recording marks the first appearance by a Brazilian orchestra on a Deutsche Grammophon release.
Mi Historia Americana – Sur is available digitally, as a two-CD set and as a three-LP edition. A separate five-track vinyl release, The Encores, was issued alongside the album. Filmed performances from São Paulo premiered on STAGE+ on October 3.
