Philharmonix are a unique ensemble featuring three members of the Vienna Philharmonic, two Berlin Philharmonic soloists, an improvising and singing violinist and a versatile pianist. With their signature blend of the “highest philharmonic quality and unrestrained joy of music making” (Kurier) Philharmonix are synonymous with “entertainment”.
Their trademark is an ability to breathe fresh life into great musical works by blending classical, jazz, folk, rock, pop and other elements with ingenious arrangements. Philharmonix’ repertoire ranges from classical and jazz to rock, from Ludwig van Beethoven and Henri Mancini to Queen. They immediately created a distinctive hallmark with their cheeky mix of styles and their own compositions. Their sophisticated playing, arranging, and sense of humour allows them to move seamlessly from the sublime to the ridiculous across a variety of genres.
Philharmonix’ new album The Vienna Berlin Music Club Volume 2 includes the Queen anthem ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ (which can almost be taken as a motto for the ensemble) and a Johann Strauss waltz, a swinging Beethoven and a jazzy Gershwin, and a Bartok dance as well as the slinking theme from ‘The Pink Panther’ by Henry Mancini.
Philharmonix’ debut recording The Vienna Berlin Music Club Volume 1 was awarded the prestigious Opus Klassik ‘Classical Without Borders’ Award in 2018.
The band’s only criteria are, “Is it good music? Do we like it? Would we enjoy performing this piece” – without any thought about genre. Philharmonix remarked, “When we like something, we’ll just play it!”
The Golden Rule of the Philharmonix is, “Anything goes, as long as it’s fun!”
