Modern rock figureheads The Cure played a set of 40 songs in London last night (December 21) in the first of a three-night run at Hammersmith Eventim Apollo. The 150-minute show included well-known hits, lesser-played album tracks and a number of songs making their live debut.

The main set included such favourites as ‘Pictures Of You,’ ‘Lullaby,’ ‘Lovesong’ and ‘Just Like Heaven,’ as well as the first-ever live performance of ‘A Man Inside My Mouth,’ recorded at the sessions for 1985’s ‘The Head On The Door.’ The band also did ‘Wailing Wall,’ from the album ‘The Top,’ for the first time since 1984.

The show had no fewer than four encores, the first of which included ‘The Empty World’ (again making its first appearance for 30 years) and ‘Charlotte Sometimes.’ Subsequent encores featured such staples as ‘Three Imaginary Boys,’ ‘A Forest,’ ‘The Lovecats’ and ‘Why Can’t I Be You,’ and the show ended with the first performance since 2004 of ‘Hey You,’

Frontman Robert Smith told the NME earlier this year that the next Cure album will be a mixture of new material and unused songs from their last studio release, 2008’s ‘4:13 Dream.’
