When the inaugural Coachella took place in 1999, it revolutionised the modern music festival. Now 20 years later, a new documentary looks back on how it all began, with Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert premiering 31 March via YouTube Originals.

“A documentary feature two decades in the making, Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert opens up the vault for the very first time to present the performances and behind-the-scenes stories that shaped the music festival,” reads the official description. Watch the official trailer below.

Going back to the festival’s early origins, the documentary features never-before-seen footage, interviews, and features key performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Billie Eilish, Daft Punk, Travis Scott, BLACKPINK, LCD Soundsystem, Rage Against The Machine, Pixies, Swedish House Mafia, Jane’s Addiction, Björk, The White Stripes, Madonna, Moby, Beck, Radiohead and more.

Since the festival started in Indio, California, it’s become a rite of passage and mecca for music fans around the world, as millions flock to the desert to make their annual pilgrimage.

Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert is produced and directed by Chris Perkel. Raymond Leon Roker and Paul Tollett serve as executive producers, reports Deadline. The documentary is a Goldenvoice and Hamsterdam production, in association with AEG Studios.

Last week, Coachella announced its line-up for the 2020 festival, which runs for two weekends, 10-12 April and 17-19, with Rage Against the Machine, Frank Ocean, and Travis Scott as the headliners. Youtube also announced it will be the exclusive live stream partner for both weekends of the festival.

As part of its new subscription service, YouTube Premium, the streaming giant has announced a robust schedule of original programming, including the 10-part forthcoming Justin Bieber documentary series titled Seasons, which is set to premiere 27 January.
