Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert’s ‘Bach: Overtures’ To See New Vinyl Reissue
The circa-1970s recording is a highlight from the archive of The English Concert.

Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert’s circa-1970s recording of Bach’s Overtures will see a vinyl reissue next month, courtesy of Deutsch Grammophon’s Original Source series.
The album features two of Bach’s orchestral pieces, No. 1 and No. 3. (No. 3, of course, includes the famous “Air” suite.) The choice to take on these compositions was fitting for London-based English Concert, which made its debut in 1973 at the English Bach Festival. That debut performance also led to their first official recording in 1974.
Founded by Pinnock and others in 1972, The English Concert was one one of the first orchestras dedicated to performing baroque and classical music on period instruments. Over the years, the orchestra has also collaborated with a bespoke choir. Pinnock, a harpsichordist, conducted the orchestra for over 30 years until 2003, when he retired to pursue solo projects. German violinist Nadja Zwiener has served as the ensemble’s concertmaster since 2007, and harpsichordist Harry Bicket currently conducts.
DG’s Original Source series is dedicated to reissuing landmark classical records from the 1970s for a new generation. Each reissue is remastered at Berlin’s Emil Berliner Studios, pressed on 1806 vinyl by Optimal, and features recording documentation and photos capturing the recording process. Other forthcoming reissues in the series include Herbert von Karajan & Die Berliner Philharmoniker’s Scheonberg – Berg – Webern and Emil Gilels’s Grieg Lyric Pieces.
