John Legend Announces Pharrell-Produced Album ‘Muse’ for October
The lead single ‘Daylight’ arrived after Legend previewed it during CBS’s ‘America’s Tailgate’ special.
John Legend has announced Muse, a new studio album produced in full and co-written by Pharrell Williams, for release on October 23 via Republic Records. The album is the pair’s first album project together after more than two decades of friendship, and its lead single, “Daylight,” is out now.

Legend previewed “Daylight” on September 8 with a performance from Nashville during CBS’s America’s Tailgate special marking the start of the NFL season. According to the announcement, Muse draws on gospel, doo-wop, soul, standards, Afrobeat and hip-hop, while combining orchestral and cinematic elements with contemporary production. Legend said he wanted to move beyond the piano-driven ballads most closely associated with his career: “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.”
The collaboration developed after Legend appeared on “The Birds Don’t Sing” from Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort ’Em Out, which Pharrell produced. Legend’s vocal on that track prompted Pharrell to suggest building a larger project around his voice. The pair began writing and recording in Paris in January 2025 at Pharrell’s studio at Louis Vuitton headquarters. “A lot of people would have imagined we’d done something like this already, but we hadn’t,” Legend said. “It felt past due.” Their work was previewed earlier with “Pray For Ya,” which was used in Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 Men’s show and a Moët Ice Impérial campaign in June.
Across the album, the title track follows a fictional relationship between a man and his muse, while “Her” draws on doo-wop and gospel. “Get Back,” featuring Pharrell, uses horns and strings, and “Bodies on the Floor,” features Clipse. Legend said the sessions also involved an unusual degree of creative trust for him: “I recorded some songs on this album that [Pharrell] fully wrote, which I almost never do.”
Outside the album, Legend is also working on Imitation of Life, a new musical scheduled to arrive at The Shed in November. The production, with a book by Lynn Nottage and direction by Whitney White, will feature Legend’s first original score for the stage.
