The song pairs a house-inspired backdrop with lyrics about family expectations, inherited patterns, and the process of defining yourself. Jepsen wrote “Motivation” with Cole M.G.N., who produced the track alongside Kyle Shearer. Jepsen said the idea began while she was back in her hometown in the fall, when the sound of leaves underfoot suggested a rhythm. Thinking about her family’s passion and high expectations, she said the song became a way to make peace with those dynamics. She called it “our little family anthem” and said she hopes it can apply to chosen families as well as relatives.

Caio Viera directed the “Motivation” video after also helming Jepsen’s visual for “On Wires.” Shot in Paris, the clip brings together a varied group of people around the song’s theme of connection and family, representing both birth and chosen family bonds. Gigi Goode, who first gained wider attention on Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and later established a career in fashion, acting, and modeling, is among those featured. Across the wider record, Jepsen moves between symphonic pop, psychedelic textures, disco, and dance music, with the “day” material leaning toward left-field pop and the “night” material carrying a more maximalist club influence.

The Day and Night rollout began with “On Wires,” the album’s first single, followed by “After All,” with both tracks representing the “day” side. “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor” then previewed the dance-focused material; its video was directed by playwright, actor, and screenwriter Jeremy O. Harris in his music-video directorial debut and stars Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Washington.
