Big John Patton and Reuben Wilson Titles Next For Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series
‘That Certain Feeling’ and ‘On Broadway’ are set for release on November 20.
Blue Note Records has announced the latest titles in its Classic Vinyl Reissue Series, with Big John Patton’s That Certain Feeling and Reuben Wilson’s On Broadway set for release on November 20. Bringing together two distinctive Hammond B3 organists from the label’s fertile late-1960s period, the releases form an organ-themed installment of the ongoing series, which presents affordable 180g all-analog vinyl reissues mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and manufactured at Optimal.
Patton was already a prolific Blue Note artist when he recorded That Certain Feeling in March 1968, his seventh album for the label. Joined by Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and Clifford Jarvis on drums, the organist put an emphasis on his own writing, moving from deep-pocket funk to modal vamps and exploring new textures and forms. Patton had emerged as one of Blue Note’s busiest soul-jazz organists during the Hammond B3’s golden age, recording extensively as both a leader and sideman between 1963 and 1970 and collaborating with musicians including Grant Green, Bobby Hutcherson, and Harold Vick.
Recorded later that same year, Reuben Wilson’s debut Blue Note album On Broadway introduced a new voice among the label’s formidable roster of organists. Wilson’s punchy, hard-grooving approach animated a varied program alongside Trevor Lawrence on tenor saxophone, Malcolm Riddick on guitar, and Tommy Derrick on drums. After relocating to New York in 1966, Wilson had formed the Wildare Express with Derrick and developed his blend of hard bop and soul-jazz before signing with Blue Note. On Broadway began a run of five sessions for the label between 1968 and 1971, recordings that would later find a new audience through the soul-jazz and acid-jazz revivals.
Curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman, the Classic Vinyl Reissue Series explores Blue Note’s eight-decade catalog. Recent 2026 installments have included Freddie Hubbard’s Goin’ Up and Lee Morgan’s Lee-Way, Jimmy Smith’s Softly as a Summer Breeze and Grant Green’s Street of Dreams, Eddie Gale’s Black Rhythm Happening and The Three Sounds’ Soul Symphony, as well as Jackie McLean’s Swing, Swang, Swingin’ and Lou Donaldson’s Sunny Side Up.
