His sister Nancy, herself an erstwhile hit recording artist, said in a statement: “The Sinatra family mourn the untimely passing of their son, brother, father, uncle, Frank Sinatra, Jr., of cardiac arrest while on tour in Daytona, Florida.” Frank Jr., who is survived by his son, Michael, was his father’s second child by his first wife Nancy.

The singer had been due to perform at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach yesterday (16), but an announcement on the venue’s Facebook page said that he had been taken ill. He died in a local hospital.

Sinatra Jr. released several albums of his own and, in the later years of his father’s life, forged a closer relationship with him and became his bandleader. In a famous incident in 1963, Frank Jr. was kidnapped at gunpoint, while on tour at the age of 19. Three days later, two of the kidnappers collected a $240,000 ransom paid by his father, while a third man set Frank Jr. free. The men were later arrested and jailed, after their claims were dismissed that the incident was a publicity stunt.

Family friend Tony Bennett wrote on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Sinatra Jr and send my sympathy to Tina and Nancy and the Sinatra family.” In her own Facebook post, Nancy wrote: “Sleep warm, Frankie.”
