From Jo’burg To Hampton Court With George Benson
Ten-time Grammy-winning guitar maestro George Benson is completing his latest South African tour before heading to the UK later this week to begin European dates. After a concert in Johannesburg on Wednesday (15), he travels to London to appear at the Hampton Court Palace Festival on 18 June.
On Saturday, Benson played in South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ of Cape Town, a concert described by entertainment website Channel 24 as “a night to remember.” Prior to his international trip, he did US shows during May, where his set included favourites from ‘Breezin” to ‘Give Me The Night’ and his well-known covers of ‘This Masquerade’ and ‘On Broadway,’ plus less familiar remakes of Norah Jones‘ ‘I Don’t Know Why’ and Glen Campbell‘s immortal hit written by Jimmy Webb, ‘Wichita Lineman.’
Benson, whose most recent studio release was 2013’s Inspiration: A Tribute To Nat King Cole, is one of many prestigious names appearing at the Hampton Court Palace Festival. Tom Jones played last Wednesday (8) and will again twice this week (15 &16); Anastacia and Jools Holland have also been at the Palace and this week and next will also see performances by Van Morrison, Caro Emerald, Art Garfunkel and Katherine Jenkins.
George, now 73, then does further UK dates in Gateshead, Glasgow, Manchester, Bournemouth, Birmingham and at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 28 June. He then goes to Paris, Barcelona and San Sebastian before returning to the US for more shows from 20 July.
