Legendary artists John Williams and Anne-Sophie Mutter have recorded a new arrangement of ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ from Harry Potter. Capturing the magic of a work loved by countless Harry Potter fans, the new recording adds a dazzling level of virtuosity to one of Williams’ most character-specific compositions. The brand new arrangement by John Williams, for violin and orchestra, was recorded with Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Los Angeles Arts Orchestra at the iconic Sony Studios in Los Angeles, and conducted by John Williams.
John Williams and Anne-Sophie Mutter describe the new version of ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ as “Harry Potter meets Paganini” and as a “Carmen Fantasy for the 21st Century”, evoking memories of Pablo de Sarasate’s famous violin showpiece on themes from Bizet’s opera Carmen.
John Williams said, “For me, recording at Sony Studios in Los Angeles is very much home territory. Having Anne-Sophie join us here has been an honor for us, and has produced a very joyous collaboration. She is truly one of our greatest artists, and her brilliant career has long established her as a distinguished and highly contributive citizen of the world.”
Anne Sophie-Mutter said, “That’s the wonderful thing about John’s music – it exists even without the film.”
John Williams is the most successful film composer of all time. He has composed some of the most popular, recognisable, and critically-acclaimed film scores in cinematic history. Anne-Sophie Mutter is universally considered to be one of the greatest violinists of modern times.
The Harry Potter film series is based on the eponymous novels written by British author JK Rowling. The soundtrack to Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (titled Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States) was composed and conducted by John Williams and the film’s score introduced many character-specific themes including ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ (the main theme) which is included in all eight of the main Harry Potter films.
