Dermot Kennedy has released The Weight of the Woods (Extended Edition) via Interscope. Kennedy wrote and recorded much of The Weight of the Woods in rural Ireland with producer Gabe Simon, whose credits include Noah Kahan and Lana Del Rey, before the pair completed the project in Nashville. Kennedy has described the album as a “homegrown” record informed by his Irish roots and his work with Simon in Nashville. The songs center on themes including love, loss, resilience, vulnerability and belonging, with organic instrumentation and folk-rooted arrangements forming much of the record’s sound.
The album gave Kennedy a new UK chart milestone, making him the first Irish solo artist to reach No. 1 with each of his first three studio albums. He is currently on a North American headline tour after a run of shows across Europe and the UK. That schedule included two sold-out dates at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, making him the first Irish solo artist to sell out two nights at the venue. He has also performed onstage with Zach Bryan and, most recently, Luke Combs.
Kennedy’s career began with busking on the streets of Ireland before Without Fear, which is Ireland’s best-selling debut album of this millennium, and his 2022 second album, Sonder. In 2024, he followed with the stripped-back EP I’ve told the trees everything. His recordings have accumulated four billion streams across platforms, and he is a platinum-selling artist in more than 12 countries.
