Jacob Hackworth Shares ‘Last Night I Got Lonely’
The song is the fourth chapter of his seven-track debut EP, ‘What Took You So Long.’
Jacob Hackworth has released “Last Night I Got Lonely,” the latest preview of his debut EP What Took You So Long. The song arrived ahead of the seven-track project, due October 23 via MCA/Goat Island Sound, and serves as the fourth chapter in a chronological breakup story.

Written by Hackworth with Gabe Foust and Danny Majic and produced by Daniel Ross, “Last Night I Got Lonely” centers on an impulsive return to an ex’s doorstep after a few drinks. In the EP’s sequence, it follows the title track, “I Wanna Quit” and “Bad As I Do,” moving the story from the initial breakup through frustration and longing. Later songs include “Help Yourself,” which finds the relationship’s roles reversed after time has passed, and “Mess That Marlboro Made,” a retrospective on the chance encounter that began the relationship.
Hackworth said the project took shape without him initially planning to connect the songs around one breakup. “This EP is probably the most full-circle thing I’ve ever done. I definitely didn’t set out to write a project about a breakup—it just kind of came together naturally,” he said. He added that the breakup became the reason he moved to Nashville to pursue his goal of becoming a recording artist. The EP’s title also reflects a question he says he has often heard after spending years working as a songwriter before releasing his own music: “What took you so long to put out your own music?”
The EP’s title track has surpassed 7 million streams and is in the Top 35 at country radio, according to a press release, which also says it set a record for the most first-week adds for an artist debut. Hackworth is currently touring with Tucker Wetmore on their third run together, including an October date at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. He is also scheduled to open for Zach John King, Corey Kent and Dylan Scott this fall, while continuing to work on new music.
