The single was recorded in New York with producer Loren Humphrey, whose recent credits include Westside Cowboy’s It Goes On, as well as work with Geese and Cameron Winter. Frontman Paul Banks said the studio version grew out of the band’s evolving live arrangements. “’Ribbon Factory’ is a song we’ve been particularly excited to share. It feels like a stepping stone for us into more lively and punky arrangements. We’ve been playing it live for over a year and that’s really influenced the recording. It’s a uniquely Irish song and is wrought with anger and despair.”

The release follows a run of festival appearances across the UK and Europe, including The Great Escape, End of the Road, Primavera, Latitude, Roskilde and Green Man. Madra Salach began a sold-out UK headline tour this week, including two nights at London’s Electric Ballroom, plus Manchester’s New Century Hall and shows in Liverpool, Cardiff, Sheffield, Glasgow, Nottingham and other cities. The band has also announced a North American tour, with three New York shows sold out.

It’s a Hell of an Age reached No. 3 on the Irish Albums Chart and the Top 10 of the UK Official Independent Albums Chart. Two songs from the EP, “The Man Who Seeks Pleasure” and “Blue & Gold,” were playlisted by BBC 6 Music, and the band also recorded a Maida Vale live session.

Madra Salach is Paul Banks on vocals, Adam Cullen on guitar, Jack Martin on mandolin and synth, Maxime Arnold on harmonium, Dara Duffy on drums and Jack Lawlor on bass. The members met while playing in different indie acts and initially connected through a shared interest in traditional Irish music, later adding electronic elements to their own material. The band is also among the contributors to the upcoming album The Songs of Shane MacGowan, due November 26, which also features Bruce Springsteen, Primal Scream and Lisa O’Neill.
