Sparklmami Announces First U.S. Headline Tour
The dates follow the release of her debut album, ‘in this body.’
Sparklmami has announced the ¡mira, mami, lo logré! tour, her first run of U.S. headline dates. The Texas-born, Chicago-based musician and visual artist will be joined by songwriter and producer Dani Offline. The tour follows the release of Sparklmami’s debut album, in this body, which Pitchfork described as “both fantastical and intimate.”
The tour opens in Chicago on Jan. 9. Tickets go on sale Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. local time.
On in this body, Sparklmami sings in Spanish and English about perception, identity and childhood memories. The album includes the songs “running,” “no te vayas” and “penso en voce,” as well as “it was 5 am,” which recounts a surreal dream about a man hugging a house until it begins to break. On “fajas,” she reflects on witnessing a loved one’s pain.
The songs draw on several musical influences: Brazilian jazz from the 1970s, Mexican boleros she heard at home, and the work of Indian singer Runa Laila. Sparklmami’s bandmates, Eddie Burns, William Corduroy, Joshua Jessen and Kenneth Leftridge Jr., contribute improvisations to the album’s mix of experimental soul, bolero and jazz funk. Her latest single, “si,” is also part of the album’s wider musical context.
Sparklmami has described the record as a way of working through grief and the effects of unresolved pain. “When I made this album, I was figuring out so much on my own while still grieving my past,” she says. “People with unresolved pain and grief can’t help but pass it on. To love is to grieve, to grieve is to love.”
