The film will then go to wide release in US theatres this summer, followed by TV broadcasts and a DVD release scheduled for later this year via Eagle Rock Entertainment.

Beyond The Notes takes an exploratory deep dive into one of the most renowned jazz record labels in the world and features a litany of jazz greats including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lou Donaldson, Rudy Van Gelder, Don Was, Michael Cuscuna, Robert Glasper, Norah Jones, Derrick Hodge, Kendrick Scott, Marcus Strickland and Terrace Martin, among others.

Initially founded in New York in 1939 by German Jewish refugees Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, the documentary goes beyond the label’s iconic recordings and examines the cultural significance of jazz as a transformative and revolutionary force.

“This damn-near immaculate music documentary by Swiss film-maker Sophie Huber pays tribute to Blue Note Records… Huber crafts a respectful, crisply told but depth-plumbing history of the label… hits nearly every music-doc note with an exceptional clarity of tone,” writes The Guardian.

From rare archival footage to current recording sessions and interviews, Blue Note Records: Beyond The Notes traces the profound influence of the jazz and the label and how it still resonates today.

“I wanted to do something that is told from today and through the musicians, rather than historians and journalists outside of the label,” Huber told uDiscover Music when the film premiered at Tribeca. “Through this we tried to create an intimate look behind the scenes of Blue Note and also focus on the creative process and what it means to create music on the spot.”
