Stevie Goes Back To Church
Stevie Wonder made a surprise appearance on Sunday (March 29) during his current American tour. The congregation at New Salem Baptist Church in north Minneapolis were somewhat taken aback to find the Motown legend sitting in the front pew.
Wonder was in town for a show that evening at the Target Centre, and was invited to the church by the Rev. Jerry McAfee, who is a friend. He not only attended, but rose to sing a favourite hymn, ‘I Won’t Complain.’ Then, at the end of the service, reports vindy.com, Stevie had a further surprise for all those present, as he announced that he would donate $10,000 to the church.
Stevie and his band are performing the whole of the classic ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’ album on the 12-show tour, which opened on March 17 in Denver. Tonight (April 1), they play at the Schotttenstein Centre in Columbus. Ohio, after which the remaining dates on the itinerary are at the Frank Erwin Centre, Austin (April 4); Bridgestone Arena, Nashville (April 7); Royal Farms Arena, Baltimore (April 9); Barclays Centre, Brooklyn (April 12) and a closing show at the Prudential Centre in Newark on April 14.
In February, the Grammy Awards staged the all-star tribute, ‘Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life — An All-Star Grammy Salute.’ Highlights of the event included a performance of ‘Fingertips’ by Beyoncé, who was then joined by Ed Sheeran for ‘Masterblaster,’ while modern-day blues guitar hero Gary Clark, Jr. took the lead on ‘Higher Ground.’
