On her latest release, five-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter H.E.R. is tackling the 1967 Sly and the Family Stone classic “Dance to the Music.” The record will appear on the forthcoming original motion picture soundtrack for Minions: The Rise of Gru, set for release on July 1 via Decca Records to coincide with the film’s theatrical release.

Shifting decades into the past, H.E.R.’s take on “Dance to the Music” pairs her signature R&B flare with booming saxophones, funk-filled basslines, and a wonderland of synths – all pulled together by producer Jack Antonoff, who is helming production and curation for the soundtrack.

“Dance to the Music” is the latest cover to be released from Minions: The Rise of Gru (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) that features appearances from Diana Ross, Bleachers, Brockhampton, St. Vincent, Kali Uchis, Caroline Polachek, Thundercat, Phoebe Bridgers, Weyes Blood, Gary Clark Jr., Tierra Whack, Jackson Wang, RZA, and more.

The seventies-inspired soundtrack is a bright backing for the major animated film franchise’s latest installation. “Dance to the Music” has been a long celebrated track from the psychedelic soul era. Earlier this year, Madison Cunningham, Falu, Nnenna Freelon, Kalani Peʻa, John Popper and The Isaacs opened the 64th Annual Grammy Awards premiere ceremony with a grand performance of the track.

The soundtrack features covers of classic records spanning from 1959 through 1979 including hits by Earth, Wind, & Fire, Kool & The Gang, Steve Miller Band, The Carpenters, John Lennon, Santanta, Simon & Garfunkel, Nancy Sinata, Linda Ronstadt, and more.

The first single to be released from Minions: The Rise of Gru (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) was an original recording by Diana Ross and Tame Impala. “Turn Up The Sunshine” followed the release of Ms. Ross’ brand-new album ‘Thank You,’ out on Decca Records last year.
