The latest installment of Vevo’s Footnotes series is here, and it features Billie Eilish taking fans behind the scenes of the music video for her hit song “Lunch.” Eilish calls the video for the first single off her blockbuster album Hit Me Hard And Soft “an ode to 90’s music videos.”

“Some artists that inspired the vibe of the video include Biggie, Tupac, Spice Girls, Green Day, and My Chemical Romance,” Eilish explains in the video. And while the singer admits that she “didn’t want to make the video directly on the nose,” she couldn’t resist eating a little lunch during the shoot.

“The most challenging thing about shooting the video was all the food I had to eat,” Eilish recalls of the self-directed music video. “I had a giant table of food that I would take bites of and spit out throughout the day. I should have done that from the beginning though, because at first I was actually eating everything and I was full immediately.” And while the video was casual, Eilish also explains how her movement coach Matty Peacock helped her choreograph the dance for the video.

Meanwhile, Eilish and her producer and brother Finneas had fun playing and experimenting while recording Hit Me Hard And Soft. “Finneas would see something cool online and get it and then we’d see if it was inspiring in some way,” the singer shares. “The album would be very different had we not used all the weird little toys.” But Finneas isn’t the only collaborator Eilish shouts out; her director of photography Rob Witt also gets some love. “He’s so collaborative and we work so closely together. I was always very particular about the cinematography, the shots and the framing of my videos,” Eilish says. “He’s everything that I wanted in a DP and more.”

Hit Me Hard And Soft was released by Interscope Records on May 17, 2024. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, while singles “Lunch” and “Birds Of A Feather” have both to-date peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. On September 29, Eilish will embark on Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, featuring 81 dates across North America, Australia, and Europe.
