Just a month after celebrating its 30th anniversary, Vince Gill’s iconic and beloved song “Go Rest High on that Mountain” has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA.

In 1996 the song was awarded two Grammys for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song and a CMA Award for Song of the Year. Additionally, a year later, it received BMI’s Most Performed Song award.

To celebrate the song’s 30th anniversary, Gill unveiled an extended version of the song that includes a new verse. In updating the recording, Gill used all the original tracks adding only his vocals for the new verse.

Gill was initially inspired to write the song following the death of his friend, country singer and at-the-time labelmate Keith Whitley. It was the death of Gill’s brother Bob in 1993 that compelled him to complete it. Fast forward to 2019, during one of the singer’s Christmas at the Ryman performances with wife Amy Grant, when Gill performed the song with an additional verse. That version of the song is now available. “The last thirty years I’ve always felt like something was missing from this song,” Gill explained recently. “With this new third verse I finally feel like the song is complete.”

Earlier in September, Gill was joined by Lainey Wilson and they performed “Go Rest High on that Mountain” during the 77th Emmy Awards on CBS as part of the In Memoriam segment.

Gill also recently wrapped up a 30+ city tour, which culminated in five sold out nights at the historic Ryman Auditorium. His sets, which routinely lasted at least three hours without an intermission, were performed to packed houses and drew much praise for his stellar musicianship, humor, storytelling, talented band line-up, and new music. He has now re-joined the Eagles for their highly anticipated return to the Sphere in Las Vegas.
