New Award For Quincy Jones, Humanitarian
A gala concert on 15 November will provide a new salute to the great Quincy Jones, when the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz presents him with its Herbie Hancock Humanitarian Award.
The event will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where Hancock himself will be among a stellar line-up of friends, collaborators and admirers of Q’s. George Benson, Wayne Shorter, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Dave Grusin, Seth MacFarlane, Jeff Goldblum, Andy Garcia, Arturo Sandoval and Jimmy Heath are also part of the bill for the tribute concert.
The event is to recognise Jones’ humanitarian work during his illustrious career, helping to raise money for the victims of Superstorm Sandy, of famine in Africa and other causes. It will be staged in conjunction with the finals of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition.
Says Hancock, Quincy’s friend of 50 years: “The fact that, for many years now, he has continued to support, encourage and nurture the younger generation of musical artists, from Michael Jackson, and beyond, is an astounding tribute to his legacy. Now at age 82, Quincy is just getting started.”
Jones had a small medical scare last month that resulted in him being taken to hospital, but soon afterwards he tweeted news of his recovery. “Had a little shortness of breath but all is good,” he wrote. “Still much to do. God Bless.”
