Cold War Kids Announce 20th Anniversary Edition Of ‘Robbers & Cowards’
The Deluxe version of the release includes four previously lost songs and six live songs.
Cold War Kids are celebrating 20 years of their breakthrough debut LP Robbers & Cowards, with new editions including the album released in 2LP deluxe, 2LP Color Deluxe, 1CD, Digital Deluxe, and ATMOS.
The new edition of Robbers & Cowards features alternate and new artwork, four previously lost songs, and six live renditions of cuts from the era.
The Long Beach band led by frontman Nathan Willett began teasing this re-release back in July, when they unveiled a new track called “Loyalty.” The song was recorded during the Robbers & Cowards sessions, but was never finished. The track joins another Robbers & Cowards era lost cut, “There Goes The Night.” Two decades later, the band was inspired to return to the studio and finish them off. They’ll both be included on these new 20th anniversary editions.
Frontman Nathan Willett said “Loyalty” is from Cold War Kids’ first national tour in 2005, when the band played it live before ever tracking it in the studio. “The song has this instant energy, this simplicity. It’s somehow bluesy and punky like The Clash,” he said. “When we recorded it this year I thought, ‘What were we thinking that we didn’t put this on the first album? It’s so good!’”
The group—which also includes Matt Maust, David Quon, Matthew Schwartz, and Joe Plummer—played some massive shows this summer. Back in July, they played a hometown show at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, supporting Young the Giant. The tour, which wrapped on August 9, included shows in Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, and Indianapolis.
Robbers & Cowards showcased the band’s inimitable blues-inspired indie rock sound to the world, producing fan favorite singles like “Hang Me Up to Dry,” “We Used to Vacation,” and “Hospital Beds.” It reached No.173 on the Billboard 200. It peaked at No.4 on Billboard’s US Heatseekers Albums chart, while “Hang Me Up to Dry” has been certified Gold.
