“BusyForYa” brings together the pianist and producer’s jazz improvisation and hip-hop beat-making. Kiefer refers to that crossover in his work as “Over The Breaks,” a phrase that also gives its name to a new festival he is launching in Los Angeles this month. Memory Bomb takes its title from his idea of a “memory bomb” as a dream, with the album drawing on three kinds of dreams: those experienced during sleep, wishful or imagined scenarios, and ambitions. Those themes provide a narrative thread for songs that also leave room for improvisation.

Kiefer began the project by bringing in CARRTOONS and Shibo as co-producers, citing their familiarity with his harmonic approach and their experience with drum programming. The sessions then expanded to include vocalists, rappers and instrumentalists, bringing different combinations of voices and players into the record while retaining Kiefer’s piano-and-beat framework. Guests on Memory Bomb include Nate Smith, Walter Smith III, Cisco Swank, Tony Stone, Erick The Architect, Relyae, Rae Khalil and Moonchild’s Amber Navran, among others.

Ahead of the album’s release, Kiefer will stage the first Over The Breaks festival at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles on September 18 and 19. The lineup includes GENA, the project of Karriem Riggins and Liv.e, alongside CARRTOONS, Luke Titus, Shibo and additional artists. Kiefer is also set to embark on a fall tour spanning North America and Asia.
