Written specifically for the film, “Draw You Out” reunites Kahan with Aaron Dessner, who co-wrote and co-produced the track at Long Pond Studio in New York and Gold Pacific Studios and East Iris Studios in Nashville. The album is executive produced by Dave Cobb and brings together 29 artists across genres. According to the announcement, the project will include previously unreleased music created for the film, with further artist announcements still to come.
Kahan told Billboard that the assignment required him to respond to both the story and the filmmakers’ interpretation of its characters. “Music is such a massive part of the Hunger Games in a lot of ways. To be able to speak to what the director sees in these characters, what Suzanne Collins wrote these characters for, and to try to match that is a big task – but a really fun challenge. I just can’t believe that I get to be a part of it,” he said.
Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on Suzanne Collins’ novel, Sunrise on the Reaping follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, during the 50th Annual Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the film also stars Mckenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak and Kelvin Harrison Jr.
The single arrives during Kahan’s current The Great Divide era. His fourth studio album, released via Mercury Records, was produced by Gabe Simon and Dessner and debuted at No. 1 in the U.S., where it remained at the top for three consecutive weeks before earning RIAA Platinum certification. Kahan is currently touring the album on The Great Divide World Tour, which includes arena dates in the U.K., Europe, Australia and New Zealand this fall.
