Schub wrote the song in the back of a cab during a difficult period. Its origins were personal, with the singer seeking the kind of encouragement he needed to hear himself. “I wrote ‘before you hit the water.’ when I was at a real low point. I think I just needed a friendly, encouraging voice in my ears. A soft sound to pick me up and lift me through the day,” Schub said.

The song also touches on questions of identity and belonging that followed his move from Germany to London at fifteen. Schub arrived to study, leaving the rest of his family in Hamburg. He immersed himself in life in the city and felt welcomed by his new country and neighborhood, but also experienced alienation and cultural estrangement. Those experiences inform the new track, with the same themes set to develop across his future releases.

Alongside his recording activity, Schub recently supported Sam Smith at London’s Coliseum. Smith personally selected him for the appearance in association with BBC Introducing. A headline run across the UK and Europe follows that support slot.
