Nia Smith has released her new single “Mr Right.” Written in Los Angeles with Kamal Wilson and Jonah Christian, the song explores the isolation of looking for a partner while friends and others around you find relationships of their own.

“Mr Right is a song for those who can’t seem to find their person, while being surrounded by people who have,” Smith said. “It follows the loneliness of watching everyone around you fall in love and wondering when it’ll finally be your turn.” She also recalled the writing session: “I made it in LA with Kamal (Wilson) and Jonah (Christian) and it felt like a magical session. I picked up the guitar and the song sort of wrote itself.”
The single follows Smith’s second EP, Payback Is A Dog, released earlier this year. That collection followed her debut, Give Up The Fear. Between the two projects, Smith took time away in Jamaica, stepping back from her career to concentrate on her songwriting and gather new experiences. “I’ve just been living life,” she explained. “I think the whole break was just me living life and just gaining life experience to talk about.”
Raised in Brixton, Smith began writing songs and learning guitar and piano as a teenager. She attended the Brit School and ELAM before signing to Polydor in 2023 and later to Def Jam 0207. Her live appearances have included Later…With Jools, All Points East and City Splash, alongside support performances for Pip Millett at Somerset House and Sasha Keable at Lafayette.
Smith is also set to perform at “Back To Black 20” on October 21. The one-night-only show will commemorate Amy Winehouse’s album Back To Black, with a lineup that also includes Jorja Smith, Yebba, Jessie Reyez and Sasha Keable. The appearance follows performances at Mahalia Presents at the Jazz Cafe and on the bill before SZA at BST Hyde Park.
