Written by Bird, Patrick Wimberly and Donna Missal, and produced by Wimberly, “Deep Blue” takes a more reflective approach while retaining the guitar-led sound associated with Bird’s work. The song focuses on the sisters’ bond and the way they remain close through significant life events and periods of distance.
“‘Deep Blue’ is a song about my sister Cat. It is about our bond, seeing each other through major live events and feeling emotionally tethered no matter the distance,” Bird said.
The release follows Gentleman, Bird’s second album, which reframes the word as an expression of queer confidence and romance. It followed her 2024 major-label debut, American Hero, an album about queerness, identity and love. Bird began playing guitar at 12, learning songs from her father’s record collection, which included The Kinks and The Who. She later formed a band and played bars and street festivals in Hong Kong before studying at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Bird has also toured North America and Europe with Reneé Rapp and appeared as direct support on Billie Eilish’s “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR.” “Deep Blue” adds a personal account of family to a catalog that has moved from the identity-focused songs of American Hero to the sharper, atmospheric sound of Gentleman.
