Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z Set To Headline New York’s Meadows Music Festival
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jay-Z, along with Gorillaz, are set to headline the second annual Meadows Music Festival. The event is due to take place from 15 September to 17 September 2017 at the Citi Field in Queens, New York.
In addition to the three main headliners, the festival presents a diverse spread of talent with Future, Nas, Weezer, Bassnectar, Run The Jewels, M.I.A, TV On The Radio, Two Door Cinema Club, Broken Social Scene, De La Soul, Blood Orange, Tegan And Sara, Foster The People and Erykah Badu among the major artists who have been confirmed. Tickets are due to go on sale at 12pm EDT on Wednesday 10 May 2017.
The inaugural festival in 2016 was headlined by Kanye West, J Cole, Chance The Rapper and Kygo. The event suffered some drama, with The Weekend cancelling, rescheduling and finally cancelling again, but the organisers, Founders Entertainment – also responsible for New York’s Governor’s Ball – reported that the event drew 35,000 fans on the first day and went on to attract a sell-out crowd of 50,000 on the second.
Last year, the festival found itself in a heated competition with AEG-owned Coachella promoter Goldenvoice’s inaugural Panorama Festival for staging rights in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens – a battle which neither festival won, despite both having names and imagery related to the park, which features the Unisphere and was the site of the 1939 and the 1964-’65 World’s Fairs. The park is awkwardly configured for a festival and for this reason neither event received the necessary permits from the city.
Consequently, Meadows Music Festival relocated to the Citi Field, which is situated adjacently to the park. The 2017 Panorama Festival, meanwhile, is due to take place at Randall’s Island, located between Manhattan and Queens. This year’s Panorama event is due to include performances from Frank Ocean, Tame Impala and Nine Inch Nails.
