ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia’ Movie Sequel In The Works

Published on

The movie that took the songs of ABBA and used them to create the smash-hit film musical Mamma Mia is to have a sequel. Deadline.com reports that the second film is on Universal Pictures’ 2018 scheduie and is due for release in the summer, which will be ten years after the release of the first film.

ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are to serve as executive producers, as they did on the initial project. Whereas the first film was based on the musical that was staged in London’s West End in 1999 and moved to Broadway in 2001, the follow-up will be written and directed by British filmmaker Ol Parker, who wrote The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. He tweeted a link to the deadline.com article.

The sequel is to be titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and the stars of the first filmMeryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth — are all due to reprise their roles from the 2008 release. It’s understood that the songs of ABBA will again form the soundtrack of the picture, and will include some music that didn’t make the original film, as well as some that did.

The second film is to be set on the  Greek island of Kalokairi, and will have the producers from the 2008 film, Littlestar’s Judy Craymer and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman. Mamma Mia grossed a reported $144.1m in the US alone.
