Lana Del Rey has paired up with pop producer wiz Jack Antonoff (Lorde, Taylor Swift, St Vincent) to release the first single ‘Mariners Apartment Complex’ off her forthcoming sixth studio album in 2019.

The alt.crooner teased the song title on social media on 7 September and premiered the psychedelic track on BBC Radio 1 on 12 September.

This marks the first time Del Rey has worked with pop’s most in-demand producer and the results play off the strengths of Antonoff’s melodic ear and Del Rey’s penchant for bittersweet ballads.

She also released an accompanying black and white video shot by her sister, mixed media artist Chuck Grant that follows the singer has she wanders on the beach and through desolate locations and communes with nature that looks like a home movie.

The song begins with soft piano, followed by a grand suite of strings then mellows out into a downtempo acoustic tune with fuzzed out guitars. Just as her previous album Lust For Life had Del Rey showing us a rare bright side of her songwriting, ‘Mariners Apartment Complex’ follows in the same vein, with her accepting both sides of herself as she sings:

“Catch a wave and take in the sweetness/Think about it, the darkness, the deepness/All the things that make me who I am.”

She later does a gender flip and references the Leonard Cohen-lyric “I’m your man” in the chorus.

The single is just one of two new tracks, alongside with the upcoming ‘Venice Bitch’ that is slated to premiere on Tuesday, 18 September. Del Rey and Antonoff are currently in the studio working on her follow up to 2017’s Lust for Life, that’s expected sometime in 2019.

Del Rey also told BBC Radio 1 host Annie Mac during an interview that she was working on a book of poetry that she plans to self-publish.
