Multi-platinum selling country musician Chris Stapleton appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night to perform his latest single “When I’m With You” from Starting Over, his acclaimed album released last November.
Stapleton performed the track in an intimate arrangement under warm lights, creating a soft and comforting atmosphere on the Tonight Show stage.
Starting Over, released via Mercury Records Nashville, has proven to be a career highlight for the Grammy-nominated singer. The album, Stapleton’s fourth full-length, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
“[Starting Over] vividly exemplifies the complex emotional character of Stapleton’s best music,” wrote The Los Angeles Times. “He’s burly but soft. Tough yet vulnerable. A protector of his loved ones and a man in perpetual search of shelter.”
The 14-track album was recorded at Nashville’s iconic RCA Studio A with a close group of collaborators, including his wife Morgane Stapleton on vocals and tambourine, Derek Mixon on drums, J.T. Cure on bass and producer Dave Cobb on acoustic guitar. Stapleton also recruited Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Paul Franklin, and the All Voices Choir featured on “Watch You Burn.”
“This record probably involves more things that were in the moment, in theory, that happened while making the record. Not for the record necessarily, but in the time period that the record got made. I rarely write things for records,” Stapleton told GQ. “‘When I’m With You,’ the first line of that song is “I’m 40 years old.” I started that song the day I turned 40.”
With five Grammys, ten Country Music Awards, and seven Academy of Country Music Awards under his belt, Stapleton has been a force in country music since the release of his debut solo album Traveller in 2015. His 2017 double releases From A Room Volumes 1 and 2 have been certified platinum and gold, respectively.
