Elastica fans are in for a treat as the group celebrates the 30th anniversary of their debut album. The self-titled album, often considered one of the most successful debuts in music, arrives this April as part of the Interscope Vinyl Collective subscription series. The first record features the original album, while the second record includes the B-sides and rarities “Spastica,” “Cleopatra,” “Bar Bar Bar (Demo),” “Car Wash, Blue (Demo),” “Brighton Rock,” “In the City,” “Pussycat,” and “Rockunroll.”

Originally formed in 1992 by Justine Frischmann and Justin Welch, Elastica generated a ton of hype in the years leading up to their debut partially because there simply weren’t nearly enough copies of their debut album to match the demand of their rapidly expanding fan base. This only increased demand. “The truth is none of that was designed to get attention for us,” Frischmann told the Los Angeles Times in 1995. “I have seen so many bands get caught in the rat race in England and destroyed by the hype machine, and we were trying to avoid that. It just backfired on us. The more we did to downplay things, the more people got interested in it.”

Elastica also features Donna Matthews on vocals and guitar and Annie Holland on bass, and has been certified gold in both the United States and United Kingdom. The album received acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic upon its release. “We knew the music was going to be around a lot longer than the hype,” Frischmann said in the same interview. “So, we wanted to make sure the music was right.” 30 years later, it’s safe to say they succeeded.

The Interscope Vinyl Collective series started in 2023 and offers subscribers a new, members-only limited-edition record every month. Previous offerings have included Elliot Smith’s XO, Dr. Octagon’s Dr. Octagonecologyst, and Pharrell Williams’ In My Mind.
