Mayer and Blake Slatkin produced the single, Serban Genhea mixed it, and it was recorded at Chaplin Studios. The song’s title came from the name Mayer gave the first voice memo of the idea. “Tom and Jerry” was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea,” Mayer said. He added that the song began with the thought, “And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you.”
The release also marks the launch of Sob Rock Records, a label Mayer founded in partnership with Mercury Records. Sob Rock, his eighth studio album, arrived in 2021 and included the songs “Last Train Home” and “Wild Blue.” The new single is his first solo release since that album.
Mayer continued performing in the intervening years with Dead & Company, the band he joined in 2015 as lead guitarist and vocalist. The group played a 48-show residency at Sphere in Las Vegas, which drew nearly half a million attendees.
Mayer’s solo catalog includes Room For Squares, his 2001 debut, and later albums Heavier Things, Battle Studies and Born and Raised. He has won seven Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for “Daughters.” His three No. 1 debuts on the Billboard 200 include Heavier Things, Battle Studies and Born and Raised.
