The song follows a narrator through closing-time calls and sunrise departures, with a chorus that acknowledges the relationship’s repeating pattern: “We’re a heartbreak record on repeat.” Metcalf explained the situation behind the song: “This song is about knowing somebody’s no good for you, but still picking up when they call,” he said. “You tell yourself you’re done, and then she’s at your door and you forget whatever speech you had planned. It’s a bad idea, but in that moment it feels pretty damn good.”
“Ain’t Mad About It” follows “Sound Of The Summer” and “Drinkin’ Well,” building on the coastal country style of Metcalf’s debut EP, Saltwater Southern. Metcalf, 20, grew up in Panacea, Florida, a fishing town of fewer than 1,000 residents where his family has lived for generations. His upbringing included mornings on a crab boat and work at a local restaurant. He cites Johnny Cash, Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney among the artists he heard growing up in his father’s pole barn, influences that informed Saltwater Southern.
Metcalf has also been visiting country radio stations during the summer and fall, performing his music and discussing the stories behind his songs. He recently appeared on USA TODAY Acoustic, where he performed “Sound Of The Summer” and spoke about his music in an accompanying interview.
