Controversial alt-rock icon Marilyn Manson is all set to star alongside Sharon Stone in a new TV series, The New Pope.

The project is being helmed by Paolo Sorrentino who also directed The Young Pope and it will be broadcast on HBO. A release date has yet to be revealed.

Variety report that both the vocalist and Stone are fans of the previous series, although there’s no word yet what roles they will play in The New Pope. John Malkovich and Jude Law were previously announced for the project and they will play two popes in the series which is described as “similar to Fargo and True Detective.”

Revealing a picture of his character on-set, Manson tweeted: “The New Pope is gonna be fantastic. When in Rome.”

Manson has had many acting roles throughout the years, including appearances in Sons Of Anarchy, Salem, Californication and David Lynch’s Lost Highway.

What Manson symbolizes is pretty clear. When you insert that into a mix that pits dark versus light, institution versus anarchy/freedom (take your pick) you have the potential to portray the chafing and inflammation that is taking place within the competition of ideologies everywhere at the moment. Manson is just the type of dramaturgical irritant Paolo Sorrention can masterfully insert into the madly beautiful and often disturbing universe that he pulls both from conscious and the hallucinatory worlds at a fluid place where they intersect.

He won’t be alone with John Malkovich, Cécile de France, Ludivine Sagnier, J.David Hinze, Silvio Orlando, Javier Cámara, Tomas Arana, Ulrich Tomsen, Yuliya Snigir, Maurizio Lombardi, Massimo Ghini and of course Jude Law moving the story along.

One simply has to be curious. Sorrentino is a master and he has nine episodes to express the complexities, shades and emotions of his game.
