Medium Build Shares ‘In My Gut’ From New Album
Zane Lowe premiered the track on Apple Music 1 before the record’s September 4 arrival.
Medium Build, the project of singer-songwriter Nick Carpenter, has released “In My Gut.” The tune premiered with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. It is set to appear on Carpenter’s forthcoming 14-track album King of Having Fun, due September 4 via slowplay/Island Records. “In My Gut” follows the previously released album tracks “Armor” and “Home Depot.” The new single adds another preview of a record that moves across country, rock and indie sounds.
Carpenter wrote “In My Gut” with artist and songwriter Annika Bennett after the pair traded stories about their childhoods and how their parents approached conflict. He said their conversation focused in part on the ways their fathers performed toughness or avoided difficult discussions, and how those habits can carry into adulthood. “We explored how we inherited these traits and the new ways we meet conflict in our own lives,” Carpenter said. “I still don’t really know what this song is about, but I think it’s my favorite.”
For King of Having Fun, Carpenter recorded live in the studio with a group of longtime friends and collaborators that included musical director Paul Rogers, engineer Jimmy Manfield and Laiko, the name used by Jake LiBassi. The sessions often treated the songs as if they were being played in larger rooms, with the musicians looking for what Carpenter described as “rock and roll moments.” The album is Carpenter’s first full-length release since Country, which arrived in 2024 and drew coverage from Paper, Billboard, The Tennessean and NME.
Medium Build is supporting Mumford & Sons on the road this August before beginning a fall headline tour. On September 5, Carpenter is scheduled to make his Grand Ole Opry debut as part of the venue’s “Opry 100” celebration. Rolling Stone included Carpenter in its “Future 25” feature, while Zane Lowe named Medium Build to his Artists to Watch 2024 list. In 2025, Carpenter received an Emerging Act of the Year nomination at the 24th Annual Americana Honors & Awards. Born and raised in Georgia, Carpenter now divides his time between Nashville, Tennessee, and Anchorage, Alaska, and has previously toured with Role Model, Tyler Childers, FINNEAS, Holly Humberstone and Briston Maroney.
