Phantogram Marks ‘Three’ Anniversary With New Releases
The anniversary edition pairs a Smoky Sky Blue vinyl pressing with new artwork and a metallic foil cover.
Phantogram has marked the 10th anniversary of Three with a limited-edition Smoky Sky Blue vinyl pressing, an alternate cover with metallic foil, and a new Dolby Atmos mix of the album. The anniversary release is accompanied by Aaron Hibell’s remix of “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore.”
Originally released on October 7, 2016, Three debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. Its 10 tracks brought the duo’s electronic production, hard-hitting beats, gauzy guitars and contrasting vocal styles into sharper focus. The album was shaped in part by the death of Sarah Barthel’s sister, Becky. Reflecting on the record a decade later, Barthel and Josh Carter said, “We made this album over six months in Echo Park during one of the heaviest periods of our lives. It came out of grief, heartbreak, noise, and the need to keep moving through it all.”
Hibell reworks “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore,” one of the album’s defining songs, adding cinematic scale and a driving groove. He described the original as his all-time favorite Phantogram song and said he wanted to build on its grit while shaping the remix around the rhythm of the vocal. The song’s connection to the album’s period remains significant for the duo: they filmed its original video at the Salton Sea, a place they described as “both beautiful and tragic.”
Phantogram has also partnered with Beatport on a remix competition for “Funeral Pyre,” the album opener. Independent artists and producers can download the song’s a cappella stems and submit their rework for the chance to have it officially released. Submissions close December 4. The duo said the song’s title evokes “a fire for saying goodbye,” while its meaning suggests the possibility of an ending becoming something new.
