Soccer Mommy, also known as indie rocker Sophie Allison, has announced her new album color theory, set for release on 28 February via Loma Vista/Concord Music.
The Nashville singer-songwriter also shared a new single, ‘circle the drain’, following previously released tracks ‘lucy’ and ‘yellow is the color of her eyes’, off the forthcoming LP.
“I wanted the experience of listening to color theory to feel like finding a dusty old cassette tape that has become messed up over time, because that’s what this album is: an expression of all the things that have slowly degraded me personally,” Allison said in a statement.
“The production warps, the guitar solos occasionally glitch, the melodies can be poppy and deceptively cheerful. To me, it sounds like the music of my childhood distressed and, in some instances, decaying.”
Allison also shared a new music video for ‘circle the drain’, directed by Atiba Jefferson and shot in Palm Springs; it features pro-skateboarders Sean Malto, Jake Anderson, Curren Caples and Nicole Hause.
Color theory follows her critically acclaimed 2018 release Clean, that featured her breakthough track ‘Your Dog’. After gaining a loyal fan base with her dreamy bedroom pop sound over the course of a number of EPs, Clean marked her first full-length studio effort.
The tracklist will be divided into three sections: blue, representing sadness and depression; yellow, symbolizing physical and emotional illness; and gray, representing darkness, emptiness and loss.
Her ambitious debut caught many critics attention and landed her on countless ‘Best Of’ year-end lists, as Soccer Mommy became an indie darling. The majority of color theory was written while Allison was touring and recorded it in Nashville with her Soccer Mommy touring band. Gabe Wax (Wye Oak, Deerhunter, The War On Drugs) produced it, while Lars Stalfors was responsible for mixing, according to the press release.
Allison also recently announced she’s hitting the road in 2020 and will be joined by the likes of indie rock songstress Emily Reo and Louisville folk singer Tomberlin. The tour kicks off on 26 March at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia and wraps up on 7 May at the Granada Theater in Dallas, Texas.
