Written and produced by the band, the Thirty Knots/Interscope Records release began as a spontaneous late-night session in their living room. The trio, singer-songwriter Eytan Peled and production duo Aviv Barenholtz and Chen Kordova, describe it as a “self-observant snapshot of modern romance,” adding that it is “questioning whether our chase after temporary, intense fast attachments are genuine feelings or just a biological reaction to fleeting highs.” Discussing their approach to songwriting, they say their music “is basically us just being honest about the stuff we usually keep in our heads but feel in our hearts.”

The accompanying video follows a mouse chasing blocks of cheese before falling in love with a cat, a turn the band describes as giving in to his self-destructive tendencies. Its story connects the pursuit of food with the relationship questions raised by the song. “We wanted something that matched the song’s cynical look at modern relationships and chasing fast thrills,” the band explains.

“Sex & Drugs” follows “Self Aware,” which spent eight weeks at No. 1 on both Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and the Mediabase Alternative chart. Before releasing their own music, the members spent five years working behind the scenes, traveling and writing songs for other acts across electronic, blues, and rock music.

Temper City’s debut album is due in 2027. Their upcoming live schedule includes iHeartRadio ALTer EGO on January 16 and M3F Festival in Phoenix in March.
