George Harrison is among the newly-announced recipients of the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards, to be observed in February.

An invitation-only ceremony to observe the awards will be held during Grammy Week on February 7, with a formal acknowledgment during the 57th annual Grammy telecast the following evening at Staples Centre in Los Angeles. The Grammys will be broadcast live in the US on the CBS Network at 8pm ET/PT.

Harrison’s recognition follows a momentous year in which his Apple Records back catalogue was reissued in a lavish box set, ‘The Apple Years 1968-1975,’ which you can order from uDiscover’s Deluxe Audio Store here.

The former Beatle’s fellow nominees for the Special Merit Awards are the Bee Gees, Pierre Boulez, Buddy Guy, Flaco Jiménez, the Louvin Brothers and Wayne Shorter, all as Lifetime Achievement Award recipients; Richard Perry, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, and George Wein as Trustees Award honorees; and Ray Kurzweil as the Technical Grammy Award recipient.

“This year we pay tribute to exceptional creators who have made prolific contributions to our culture and history,” said Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow. “It is an honour and a privilege to recognise such a diverse group of talented trailblazers, whose incomparable bodies of work and timeless legacies will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises performers who have, as the Recording Academy says, “made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.” The Trustees Award honours such contributions in areas other than performance, with both awards decided by the votes of the Recording Academy’s National Board of Trustees. Technical Grammy Award recipients are determined by the votes of the Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter Committees, as well as the Academy’s Trustees.
