The 17-year-old singer-songwriter Billie Eilish is now the youngest ever female solo artist to score a UK No.1 album thanks to her debut WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?.
On 5 April, the Official Charts confirmed that WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? is now the second best-selling album of 2019 so far, making it second only to Ariana Grande’s fast-rising thank u, next.
Eilish supersedes Joss Stone who previously held the record when her 2004 LP, Mind, Body & Soul went to No.1 when she was just two months older than Eilish. This also marks the first time an international artist’s debut has topped the UK chart since Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die in 2012.
“I appreciate you making WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? the No.1 album in the UK so much,” the singer told Official Charts. “We worked really hard on this album. Thank you for the love!”
After developing a rabid cult following, Eilish’s major label release was one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year. The teenaged-talent-turned-pop-sensation has seemingly arrived on the scene overnight and has broken the typical pop star mould both through her music and image.
She also snagged a slot on the Billboard Hot 100 with her goth-pop anthem ‘bury a friend’, that’s been on the chart for 9 weeks and counting.
The album not only boasts incredible streaming numbers but also traditional album sales, which is rare considering her teen-skewing fan base.
As she prepares to play the festival circuit, Eilish will be playing the main stage both At Coachella this month and Glastonbury this summer.
She’s also gained some famous fans with her debut, with everyone from Dave Grohl to Paramore’s Hayley Williams singing her praises.
