Ariana Grande Set to Star In Netflix Adaptation Of ‘The Prom’

TV showrunner Ryan Murphy has cast Ariana Grande as one of leading stars in his latest film adaptation of the Tony-award winning musical The Prom.

The film is set to premiere in fall 2020 through a limited theatrical release prior to making its official debut on Netflix.

Opening on Broadway just last year, The Prom follows two veteran Broadway performers looking to revive their careers and become famous again. Desperate to get back into the limelight, the pair decides to help an Indiana high school student whose prom was cancelled after she attempted to bring her girlfriend as her date.

Grande is set to play the high schooler’s girlfriend, with Meryl Streep and James Corden as the two former Broadway stars. The nationwide search for the high schooler, however, is still underway. The all-star cast also boasts Nicole Kidman, Keegan Michael-Key, Andrew Randells, and Crazy Rich Asians breakout star, Awkwafina.

Murphy is currently co-producing the film’s soundtrack with Grande, alongside her manager she shares with Justin Bieber, Scooter Braun.

This isn’t Grande’s first time taking a Broadway stage. Grande began to develop and refine her singing voice in a theatre setting since she was a teenager. At age 15, she played a prominent role in the Broadway play 13 and even won a National Youth Theatre Association Award for her performance. This was her first major acting role prior to landing her position on the Nickelodeon show Victorious.

Following her time spent on Victorious, Grande began picking up small featured roles in live television plays. In 2016, she was cast as Penny in NBC’s Hairspray Live! And in 2018, performed in NBC’s A Very Wicked Halloween anniversary concert.

Grande is currently on her Sweetener world tour and recently announced she was extending the tour with a 19-date run in North America that launches in November.
