Even before the monumental success of the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody introduced a new generation of fans to the raw charisma of Freddie Mercury, the Queen frontman has been captivating audiences long after his passing in 1991.
With a new career-retrospective box set out this fall, and his global birthday celebration, uDiscover Music took the opportunity to revisit his legacy at pop-up at Las Vegas’ Life Is Beautiful festival.
If anyone would have enjoyed the debauchery, camp and creative energy of Las Vegas, it would have been Freddie Mercury. Queen have played Sin City throughout the 70s and his presence is still felt in the city, with numerous shows on the Strip paying tribute to the late legend.
“When it comes to live bands and lounge acts, probably only Bruno Mars is covered more frequently than Freddie and the boys,” writes Las Vegas Weekly.
From ‘Raiding the Rock Vault’ at the Hard Rock and ‘Tenors of Rock’ at Planet Hollywood to the newly rebooted musical, ‘We Will Rock You’, Queen is as much a part of Vegas as Old Blue Eyes himself.

“Self-confidence, eccentricity, a leader, an innovator,” expressed a number of young fans. “Liberated and free, he doesn’t care what anybody thinks about him.”

“’Killer Queen’, one hundred percent, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’”, to name a few.
What makes Freddie Mercury so iconic?
“He’s my entire childhood, I listened to Queen all the time while I was growing up,” said another fan.
“A phenomenal voice, his different looks throughout the years, he’s just a legend,” echoed another. “He was so fully himself.”
