Last night, from one country legend to another, Reba McEntire paid tribute to Patsy Cline with an emotional, a cappella cover of “Sweet Dreams.” The performance aired as part of “Big Night at the Museum,” a benefit for Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which has been shuttered for months amid the pandemic.

Patsy Cline recorded the Don Gibson-penned “Sweet Dreams” in early 1963, just one month before she tragically lost her life in a plane crash. The single was released not long after her death and became a crossover success – hitting No. 5 on the Country chart and breaking the Pop chart’s Top 50.

Less than two decades later, McEntire made the song her own for her sophomore album, Out of a Dream. “Sweet Dreams” scored the artist her first solo Top 20 hit on the Country Charts, and, for years, McEntire regularly closed out her live shows with an a cappella rendition of the tune. In a heartbreaking and eerie turn of events, the artist retired the song following a 1991 plane crash that killed her tour manager and multiple members of her band. She has since performed the ballad sparingly over the past 29 years.

In addition to McEntire’s appearance, “Big Night at the Museum” also featured performances by Carlene Carter, Tim McGraw, Emmylou Harris, Brad Paisley, Lucinda Williams, Keb’ Mo’, and Ricky Skaggs, among many others. Country Music Hall of Fame member Marty Stuart hosted the evening. To watch the full event, or to make a donation, visit YouTube.

In other Reba news, it was recently confirmed that the artist will star in a new TV series based on the popular 1987 Fannie Flagg book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. The book first spawned the hit 1991 film, Fried Green Tomatoes, starring Mary Stuart Masterson, Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary-Louise Parker, and Cicely Tyson.

McEntire will also co-host the upcoming CMA Awards, alongside Darius Rucker. The 54th Annual awards show will air live from Nashville on November 11.

What a beautiful rendition of that song. I have listen to Patsy Cline sign it many times from my record collection. I must say that although I am an 87 year old disabled Vietnam veteran this rendition by Reba brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Reba. You are one of the greatest. Have a lot of your records also in my collection.
