K-pop phenomenon TWICE has released a new single as a holiday gift to their fans. Produced by hitmaker Ryan Tedder and Melanie Joy Fontana, “Cry For Me” tells the story of a woman whose emotional baggage manifests itself as thorns that grow from her skin, a theme far more mature than listeners have seen from TWICE.

TWICE and JYP Entertainment teased the track on YouTube prior to its release. In the ominous concept film visual, the group’s members find themselves surrounded by burning candles and vines laced with thorns.

Last week, TWICE performed “Cry For Me” at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards, which led to the official release of the song.

“Cry For Me was originally a song that might have never been released to the world,” TWICE member Nayeon told fans on a livestream. “But it managed to be saved through performing on MAMA.”

Written by J.Y. Park and Heize, “Cry For Me” follows the release of TWICE’s official sophomore album Eyes Wide Open, which arrived on October 26 via Republic Records.

While the project saw the group taking steps in a more mature direction with their songwriting, they teased that the B-side tracks that would follow the album would show more of that side of their artistry.

“When you listen to this album’s B-sides, I think you’ll be able to feel a lot of changes from the music that TWICE has released until now,” Sana said in an interview with South Korean search portal Naver.

TWICE made their official debut in 2015 through JYP Entertainment with members Chaeyoung, Jeongyeon, Tzuyu, Nayeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, and Dahyun. Since then, they have become one of the highest-selling groups in South Korea and are now bringing their infectious dance-pop stateside at Republic Records.
