Sam Smith And Normani’s ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ Reaches A Billion Views On YouTube
The 2019 song’s music video was shot in London.
The music video for Sam Smith and Normani’s 2019 collaboration “Dancing With A Stranger” has reached the monumental billion view count on YouTube. The clip was directed by Vaughan Arnell and shot in London.
The track was a massive hit upon its release, peaking at No.3 on the UK charts and No.7 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent a total of 45 weeks. Additionally, the single has been certified eight times platinum in Australia, four times platinum in the US, and platinum or higher in nine other countries. Smith and Normani spoke about the track with Billboard after it was released back in 2019, discussing how they subverted expectations to create the hit.
“I had just gone through a breakup and the last thing I wanted to do was write a sad song,” explained Smith. “I was listening to a lot of really sexy music because it made me feel better, so I wanted the song to capture what I was doing: going to clubs and kissing people.”
Smith also discussed how the song helped them transition into who they are today as a non-binary person. They added: “The song launched me into a really beautiful space of writing and freedom. There’s a femininity within that song that has ignited a flame within me; it triggered the transition I’ve made into a nonbinary person.”

In other Sam Smith news, they just concluded an epic 20 night residency at San Francisco’s legendary Castro Theatre. The run has included special guests and surprises for Smith’s adoring audiences, including an appearance from Sienna Spiro. During the March 4 date of the “To Be Free: San Francisco” residency, the two artists performed a duet version of Spiro’s “Die On This Hill” at the recently re-opened LGTBQ+ cultural landmark.
“I LOVE San Francisco and The Castro especially has been so central to the Queer community here over the years,” said Smith in a statement regarding the residency. “These shows will also celebrate the official reopening, so it’s truly an honour to become part of this iconic venue’s history.”
