The Tragically Hip Release ‘Live July 22–August 20, 2016’
The collection draws from the band’s final cross-Canada run and precedes a CBC anniversary rebroadcast.
The Tragically Hip have released Live July 22 – August 20, 2016, marking 10 years since the band played its final concert in Kingston, Ontario. The live album collects recordings from the group’s final cross-Canada tour, including “Ahead By A Century” from the August 20, 2016 Kingston finale, and arrives one day before CBC’s August 22 rebroadcast and global live stream of The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration.
The collection draws on performances from across the Man Machine Poem Tour. Rather than focusing only on the final night, the album brings together standout recordings from multiple tour stops. The Man Machine Poem Tour comprised 15 dates across Canada and concluded in the band’s hometown on August 20, 2016. CBC carried the final concert nationwide under the title The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, with the broadcast reaching one third of Canadians, according to a press release. It was one of the most celebrated concerts in the history of the nation.
CBC’s August 22 presentation will open with A Beautiful Thing, a special introduction directed by filmmaker Mike Downie, Gord Downie’s brother. A Beautiful Thing includes previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage from The Hip’s 2016 tour, along with appearances from notable Canadians discussing the band and the significance of the Kingston concert. Following the introduction, CBC will air The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration commercial-free in its original form at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET on CBC Gem, CBC Music’s YouTube page, and CBC Radio One on SiriusXM.
