Four classic live albums from The Rolling Stones are coming to SHM-CD soon.
Four classic live albums from The Rolling Stones’ late-’70s and early-’80s period are coming out in SHM-CD format. Stripped, Still Life (American Concert 1981), Still Life (Wembley Stadium 1982), and Love You Live are all available to order now.
Love You Live, the band’s third official concert album, followed a somewhat unique path to reach the shelves. Released in 1977, it stitched together performances from 1975 and 1976 tour stops, adding in a handful of stripped-down blues covers recorded at Toronto’s El Mocambo club. Andy Warhol memorably created the album’s artwork, and it charted within the Top 5 in both the US and UK upon release.
Two different Still Life releases capture the group at their early-1980s stadium peak. The original Still Life (American Concert 1981) arrived in mid-1982, drawing from shows during the band’s 1981 US trek and timed to coincide with their subsequent European dates that summer. The record became a hit, also cracking the top five on both sides of the Atlantic despite mixed reviews from critics who felt it was too polished to really capture a Stones concert. A companion release, Still Life (Wembley Stadium 1982), documents a full London gig from that same Tattoo You tour. Originally tucked into the 2021 Tattoo You anniversary box, its 26 songs — opening with “Under My Thumb” and running through staples like “Honky Tonk Women” — are now getting a standalone release for the first time.
Rounding out the set is Stripped, the band’s 1995 hybrid of live cuts and acoustic studio re-recordings, built around a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” that became a rock radio staple. The later-career release was recorded between London, Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Tokyo, and marked their second album into a Virgin Records deal. In 2016, interest revived in the record after the band participated in a documentary about its making.
